Did You Love Me?

The snow falls steadily

And silently as if it was a

Forceless grasp around me.

I’m alone but my thoughts

Hold you too tightly,

And I’d walk through the snow

That’s past my knees

To ask you the question.

The small circle of standing stones

Surrounds her with a choice—

If she leaves him, she’ll never know,

If she stays, she must find him

Amidst the rolling hills and valleys

In mud and darkness

To ask him one question.

The ring sits on the counter,

The diamond shines under the light,

And all I can think of is his smile on

The night he promised his life to mine.

I can picture the aisle,

I can still feel my veil

In between my fingertips

As I walk to him,

But as I turn around tonight,

I’m alone with no way

To ask him one question.

I sent the letter even though

It was half-written.

Years have left us apart

On purpose, I’ve presumed,

But my pen aches to write

Just one more line—

Just one question—

Just so I could know

If it was all in vain.

But I sealed it,

And sent it to you,

Whispering faintly to myself,

Did you ever love me?
