Gold Ribbons

In the swiftly changing leaves of autumn’s leaves

Among the reds, yellows, and shades of orange,

There’s a tint of gold that to the untrained eye,

Does not truly exist.

But if you look closely and while you fall in love,

You’ll see the thin gold ribbons

Around the leaves as they spend their last days

On their branches

Then fall through the air

And land softly and silently

Onto the cold ground.

But the gold ribbons remains

And they’ll remain as long as

The love in the air all around us

Stays alive— even if just an ember.

The gold ribbons among the deep oranges

And reds flicker and light up the room.

The colorful leaves pile up.

The embers ignite.

The sparks fly golden

To create a warm and delightful

Bed for my lonely heart.

The gold ribbons tie us together

Even from 500 miles away.

I know they’ll bring us back

And fly around us, embrace us.

If a love that can only be found again

In the silence of an autumn night,

Next to a fire in the embrace

Of the blanket and you

The gold ribbon among the trees and lights’ glow

As I imagine our life I only hope

The gold ribbons can bring us together.
